Hey 73: Japan earthquake follow-up with @__josh__ Josh Fields on iPhone video, 2 hours from Sendai
Last night Josh Fields spoke to us just two hours after the Japan earthquake from his home in Daigo, Japan. Now, 18 hours later, he reported live from the small town of Yamatsuri in the Fukushima Prefecture.
Broadcast production note: Josh communicated by using a pocket wi-fi, his iPhone 4, and Skype video. We streamed the interviews live on our side to Ustream, and got a couple of questions from our chat room as well.
Both Yamatsuri and Daigo are inland, about two hours and 120 miles from Sendai, and far less damaged than the coastal town, Yamatsuri less so. However, water supplies in both towns are considered unsafe for drinking at this time.
Josh repeatedly said that his region paled in comparison to the situation in Sendai, which he had been monitoring on his Japanese phone, which also acts as a digital television.
Josh and others from his town had driven to Yamatsuri to get gas, food, water and other supplies. He spoke to several and showed how his grocery store had no instant ramen left (the meal being easy to prepare if you can boil water). Additionally, he drove to the nearby gas station to show long lines of cars politely waiting for gas.
